Frank has been a free-lance performing musician in the Scarborough area for many years. He plays piano, organ and early keyboards, and has appeared on a number of occasions as a soloist with the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra, for whom he gives the pre-concert talks; the last concerto he played with them was Dohnanyi’s ‘Variations on a Nursery Theme’, and on July 16th he will perform Mozart Piano Concerto in Eb (No.22), on his 1789 square piano. He is currently appearing both as soloist and accompanist in a number of lunchtime concerts, in Scarborough, Whitby, and Redcar. Having begun life as a chorister himself, he enjoys working with choirs, becoming for some years organist and choirmaster at St Mary’s; he has also conducted the Scarborough choral society, and is currently its regular accompanist. He recently became accompanist for the Hackness Ladies Choir, under their new conductor Ralph Earwicker. Having taught in schools, he now teaches privately, enjoys accompanying for Whitby’s Eskdale Festival, and continues to be involved with music in schools.
Frank is a fantastic musician and entertainer and we are very lucky to have have him coming as a late replacement for the poorly Paul Hudson. Paul is desperately sorry that due to a nasty chest infection he will not be able to join us on Saturday, but he sends his wishes and knows that you will have a great evenings entertainment with Frank, with whom Paul has worked many times.
Please come along and support Hornsea Music Society and be treated to an evening of Frank James.
Charlotte Unwin began studying music at the age of 5 where she was taught piano by Kathryn Henshaw. She continued learning piano with Margaret Curtis (2002-2004) and Claire Dunham (2004-2006). In 1995, she joined Trafford Music Centres where she began learning the flute under the tuition of Amanda Potter and in 2000 began learning the bassoon. She took it up quickly and within a year had already achieved Grade 4. In 2004 she left the Music Centre and began studying with Anthea Wood. In 2006 she gained a place studying bassoon at the Royal Northern College of Music where she studied with Laurence Perkins, Simon Durnford and Peter Wesley. She graduated in summer 2010 with a BMus (Hons) 2:1.
Her orchestral playing has led her to being principal bassoon of Hallé Youth Orchestra for 3 years and of Trafford Youth Philharmonic Orchestra for two years. Charlotte annually plays in the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra as well as the Edinburgh Rehearsal Orchestra. At the RNCM she performed in many orchestras which included Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra and Concert Orchestra, some of which gave her the opportunity to perform Messiaen’s “et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum” in Tewkesbury Abbey and Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Song Suite” at the Albert Hall for the Proms. She was also a member of “The Arion Ensemble” Wind Quintet, who have performed in various venues across the country and took part in a wind ensemble festival in France.
In September 2009 she entered the Traditional Youth Marching Band Competition (TYMBA) where she won the Woodwind category and in November 2009 she competed for, and won, the award of TYMBA Musician of The Year.
Charlotte is currently studying on a PGCE in Secondary Music at Liverpool Hope University which she will complete in summer 2011.
She is still an active bassoon player across the country regularly playing for Beverley Chamber Choir, Chorley Choral Society and Liverpool Hope Concert Band.
Hornsea Music Society has now entered a new year. We have a firm foundation but the committee feels that it is time to build with a different approach. Still the live classical music everyone enjoys, but interspersed with varying tempos and using some young artistes.
Yorkshire is alive with talent and Hornsea has the venue and grand piano that could be the shop window.
You can contact us and tell us how you could contribute to the classical concert scene. We look forward to hearing from you.
